A Napa mother was arrested on suspicion of DUI after a crash that killed her two young children and left her seriously injured, authorities said.
Yesica Barajas, 31, was driving a 2006 Nissan sedan at high speed around 7:20 a.m. Sunday when she took the offramp from southbound Highway 29 to West Imola Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Vince Pompliano. The car veered off the eastern edge of the road and slammed into a tree.
Her two children — a 10-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl — were pronounced dead at the scene.
Barajas suffered major injuries and was taken to Providence Queen of the Valley Medical Center. Authorities arrested her on suspicion of DUI-related charges, and she will be booked into the Napa County jail once she is medically cleared, Pompliano said.
Investigators are still determining the exact charges she will face and are working to establish how fast the Nissan was traveling before the crash.
The offramp was closed for several hours, reopening around noon.
