A man was killed at the Vantage Point Inn in Woodland Hills after exchanging gunfire with Los Angeles police Sunday night, authorities said.

Officers were called about 10:15 p.m. to the 21700 block of Ventura Boulevard on a report of a man with a gun, police said.

Officers found him with what they believed to be a rifle, and at least one officer fired at the man after he fired at police, police said.

The man fled and a perimeter was established, but SWAT officers later found he went back into the motel.

The man had more than one gunshot wound and died at the scene, police said.

It is unclear if the fatal gunfire was from police or whether the man shot himself, and where on the motel property the gunfire was exchanged.

Video from O.C. Hawk, a freelance news organization that sometimes works with the Southern California News Group, shows officers stationed outside the Vantage Point Inn.

Saul Arellano, who was staying at the motel, told O.C. Hawk he was in his room when heard the sound of breaking windows and later saw a man come outside a room with only a towel wrapped around him and screaming.

At one point the man said, “The end is here!” Arellano said.

The man later fired his weapon at a person passing by on a skateboard, Arellano said, prompting the skateboarder and Arellano to run.

After officers arrived, Arellano said, the man fired at officers, who returned fire.

The man was believed to be 40 to 50 years old, LAPD spokesperson Officer D. Orris said.
