Santa Claus made a stop at Eastpointe City Hall on Wednesday night during the annual tree lighting ceremony.

The chilly temperatures didn’t dampen the spirits of adults and children who came to sing some Christmas carols, look at all of the colorful and festive lights, and visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Eastpointe Economic Development Director Ian McCain manned the s’mores station where graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate and skewers were available to create sweet treats over a small fire.

Inside City Hall, there were doughnuts, apple cider, and a small hint of spring: free vegetable and flower seeds from the crew at the Urban Seed Community Garden.

Eastpointe City Council chambers were transformed into a cozy living room with a fireplace and stockings hung where Santa met with local children — all of whom were on his “nice” list — and hear their holiday wishes. The line to see Kris Kringle stretched the length of the City Hall lobby, but no one seemed to mind waiting.

Wednesday night was also the official start of Light Up the Night with many local businesses decorating their facades with holiday lights.

Santa said he will be back in Eastpointe on Dec. 24 with his sleigh and reindeer while making his annual rounds to deliver gifts to children around the world.
