Bremen High School students lauded

for language skills

Bremen High School recently inducted 34 students into the French and Spanish national honor societies after they maintained a high average in their language class as well as their other classes. Students inducted into the French National Honor Society were Valerie Cazares, Jackie Diaz, Deysi Garcia, Stephanie Karwaczka, Emily Leal and Ariana Lopez. Students inducted into the Spanish National Honor Society were Jala Blackwell, Zoe Gurick, Alani Perkin, Madison Pfeiffer, Juana Carrillo, Evan Karasoff, Jacqueline Mejia, Cristal Orozco, Ruby Perdomo, Emily Roa, Zitlalic Verduzco, Alma Zambrano, Elizabeth Zarate, Celeste Barban, Claudia Duarte, Cristina Flores, Veronica Herrejon, Gicelle Magana, Lizbeth Palafox, Nomar Perez, Jackeline Plascencia, Yarithza Ramirez, Alizandra Sanchez, Karina Sanchez, Melissa Vasquez, Tommy Avalos, Bianca Eady and Karen Guerrero.

Stagg High School’s anti-violence effort gets national nod

Stagg High School and several of its students were recognized recently by Sandy Hook Promise, a gun violence prevention organization, for their efforts last fall during Say Something Call-to-Action Week. Stagg was awarded the Student Spirit, Creativity and Sustainability Award after an effort involving its students as well as outreach to students in neighboring districts. Students formed a SAVE Promise Club, marched in the homecoming parade, decorated the campus and bathroom mirrors with uplifting messages, created a social media campaign, and produced a slideshow and video that can be viewed on YouTube. Students also created a sustainability plan to make Say Something a part of the school culture and have plans for at least six more related activities.

Oak Forest High School students bring home FCCLA gold

Oak Forest High School seniors Alyvia Dennis and Jessica Andriola each took home a gold medal at the recent Family, Career and Community Leaders of America state competition in Springfield. Dennis competed against 45 others in the cookie-decorating event and scored 97.5 out of 100 by designing a cookie that looked like a baby’s bottle, decorated with flavored buttercream icing. Andriola competed against about 35 others in the fashion apparel display category and earned 98 points out of 100 with her display of evening wear and coordinated accessories.

Providence Catholic junior to bike across state on 330-mile trip

Patrick Murray, a junior at Providence Catholic High School, will soon embark on a 330-mile journey in recognition and honor of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Murray, whose father is an Orland Park police officer, is participating in the effort through Cycle Across Illinois, a charity ride that raises money and awareness for the Illinois Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors, which includes family members, loved ones and co-workers of fallen officers. Providence Catholic High School hosted an out-of-uniform day that raised $950 so he could participate. The July 19-22 ride starts in Alton and ends in Chicago.

Frankfort Square School raises money for autism awareness

During Autism Awareness Month in April, Frankfort Square School sold autism puzzle pieces for $2 and Autism Awareness bracelets for $1, raising $317 that was donated to Autism Speaks.
