Join members of the local Muslim community for the Yolo County Muslim-American Community Dinner, an evening of shared understanding, reflection and community building.
The dinner will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Yolo County Office of Education, 1280 Santa Anita Ct., Suite 120, Woodland.
This event offers an excellent opportunity for the community to engage with the local Muslim community, learn about the challenges many students face and enjoy a meaningful evening together. The gathering will include speakers, a raffle and a free gourmet Pakistani buffet dinner.
The dinner will also feature keynote speaker Imam Azeez, co-founder and Senior Imam of the Tarbiya Institute, California. Azeez is a respected scholar who focuses on youth and interfaith dialogue. His background as a physician, social scientist, and Islamic theologian offers a unique perspective that will be especially valuable for those working with students of diverse backgrounds.
California is home to one of the largest Muslim populations in the United States, and schools are increasingly becoming spaces where students from diverse backgrounds, including Muslim youth, interact. Unfortunately, Muslim students—especially those who wear visible symbols of faith such as the hijab—face higher risks of bullying and discrimination.
A 2017 survey by CAIR revealed that nearly 1-in-4 Muslim students experience bullying in schools, with girls often facing targeted harassment due to both their faith and appearance. As educators, understanding these challenges is crucial for fostering inclusive and supportive school environments.
The event is free and offered at no cost, but space is limited. To register, visit https://yolocoe.k12oms.org/2495-259725.
