One person died after a sedan collided with two ATV riders on Saturday in Perris, authorities said.
About 7:13 p.m., Riverside County sheriff’s deputies responded to a collision near the intersection of Walnut Avenue and El Nido Avenue in an unincorporated area of Perris, west of Ramona Expressway and south of Rider Street.
The crash involved a Dodge Charger and two Yamaha Raptors, officials said Sunday.
One ATV rider died at the scene, sheriff’s Lt. Deirdre Vickers said. Another person, riding the other ATV, had major injuries and was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
A preliminary investigation revealed the Charger was westbound on Walnut Avenue when it tried to pass a group of off-road vehicles also westbound in front of it. The driver tried to use one of the eastbound lanes and collided with two of the ATVs.
Off-road vehicles are prohibited from being driven on regular roadways in that area, Vickers said.
The sedan driver stayed behind and cooperated with the investigation, and drugs or alcohol did not appear to be involved, authorities said.
Walnut Avenue between El Nido Avenue and Sherman Avenue was temporarily closed.
