Time to stand up to support trans youths
This is a needlessly dangerous time for trans youths. It is dangerous because of the bigotry that exists in our country. Anti-trans sentiment is promoted by Mr. Trump even though he says he has no problem with trans people.
He has encouraged the more than 400 anti-trans bills that have been passed in conservative state legislatures.
It is difficult for trans youths because they go through a period of confusion before determining on their own that they are not the sex that’s on their birth certificate. Coming out is risky because of the reaction of other youths and adults. We know about the risk of being trans from all the crimes, including murder that we see reported in the news.
It is risky because against all the professional medical organizations that have determined being trans is a normal condition, many conservative legislators are willing to and have passed laws interfering with their needed medication, even medications that other youths are entitled to.
Suicide among youths in this country is increasing, especially within the LGBTQ community. It is incredibly heartless and cruel that Mr. Trump has shut down the suicide hotline for this group of people.
You probably know many trans people whose appearance doesn’t suggest that they are trans and you find them to be good friends, reliable workers and wonderful contributors to the community. Yet you’re either willing to show your bigotry or not willing to stand up for this community.
This needs to change.
