Novak Djokovic was upset by Matteo Berrettini 7-6 (4), 6-2 on Tuesday at the Qatar Open in Doha in the Serb’s first match since exiting the Australian Open with a hamstring injury.
The 37-year-old Djokovic, ranked No. 7, lost to the Italian for the first time in five career matches and will have to wait to join Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) as the only players in the ATP Tour’s 100-win club.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion reached the Australian Open semifinals but retired from the last-four match against Alexander Zverev because of a hamstring injury.
Djokovic said he didn’t have “any pain or discomfort.”
“I was outplayed by just a better player today,” he said. “I wasn’t at my desired level, and it could be that I’m still not moving the way I want to move, but ... I played without pain, so there is no excuse in that.”
Berrettini won for the 10th time in his career against a top-10 player and will face Tallon Griekspoor in the second round.
Also, No. 2 seed Alex de Minaur defeated Roman Safiullin 6-1, 7-5.
Andy Murray looks set to remain as Djokovic’s coach likely through the French Open.
Djokovic told the ATP Tour’s in-house media channel Tuesday that Murray has agreed to stay on as coach.
Djokovic and Murray joined forces ahead of the Australian Open in what initially was seen as an unlikely pairing. After Murray retired last year, Djokovic reached out with the coaching proposition.
“I expressed my desire to continue the collaboration with him, so I am really glad he did accept,” Djokovic said. “It is indefinite in terms of how long we are going to work together, but we agreed most likely in the States and some clay-court tournaments. We will see how it goes after that.”
Emma Raducanu, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, lost 7-6 (6), 6-4 to Karolina Muchova in the second round at the Dubai Championships.
Third-ranked Coco Gauff, the 2023 U.S. Open winner, exited the WTA 1,000-level tournament earlier Tuesday in a second-round upset loss to McCartney Kessler.
The 14th-seeded Muchova advanced to a meeting against No. 53-ranked Kessler, who followed up her opening win over Amanda Anisimova with a surprising 6-4, 7-5 win over Gauff.
Gauff hadn’t fallen to an opponent ranked outside the top 50 since a loss to Sofia Kenin (128th) at Wimbledon in 2023.
Earlier, top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka eliminated Veronia Kudermetova 6-3, 6-4, second-seeded Iga Swiatek beat Victoria Azarenka 6-0, 6-2. and defending champion Jasmine Paolini defeated Eva Lys 6-2, 7-5.
Teenage sensation João Fonseca frustrated his home fans at the Rio Open in a first-round loss in Rio de Janeiro, two days after winning his first ATP title.
Fonseca lost 6-1, 7-6 (4) to No. 60-ranked Alexandre Muller of France, making 34 unforced errors and appearing to be exhausted during the match.
The 18-year-old Brazilian won his career first title at the elite level with a victory in the Argentina Open final on Sunday.

The Carolina Panthers re-signed quarterback Andy Dalton to a two-year contract, giving them a veteran presence behind starter Bryce Young heading into the 2025 season.
The 37-year-old Dalton, who threw for 989 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions in five starts last season, was set to become an unrestricted free agent next month. Dalton joined the Panthers in 2023 and spent the past two seasons mainly backing up Young, the No. 1 overall pick that year.
However, Dalton was thrust into a starting role in Week 3 last season when first-year head coach Dave Canales benched Young after the Panthers started 0-2 and were outscored 73-13.
Dalton responded by throwing for 319 yards and three touchdowns in his first start, a 36-22 win at Las Vegas. However, he lost his next four starts before being sidelined with a sprained thumb following a car crash in Charlotte.
Young regained the starting job and never looked back.
Following a loss to Denver, Young responded with two wins and showed steady improvement the rest of the season.
Young, the former Mater Dei High standout, went 4-6 as a starter down the stretch and finally appeared to figure things out in Week 18 when he threw for 251 yards and combined for a career-high five touchdowns in a 44-38 overtime road win against the Atlanta Falcons, cementing his role as a starter heading into the next season.
Dalton has thrown for 39,500 yards with 253 touchdowns and 150 interceptions during his NFL career. A second-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2011, Dalton has played for five teams during his 14-year career and been selected to the Pro Bowl three times.
The NFL has rescinded a $25,000 fine Houston’s Joe Mixon received for comments about officiating in the Texans’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round of the playoffs after an appeal by the running back.
Mixon was given the fine for his comments following the 23-14 loss where Houston’s defense was penalized twice for hits on quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Appeals officer Chris Palmer said in a letter to Mixon, which was obtained by ESPN.com, that during the hearing process on Jan. 30 he found that Mixon “did not necessarily publicly criticize the officials.”
When asked about the officiating after the game, Mixon said: “everybody knows how it is playing up here. You can never leave it into the refs’ hands. The whole world sees, man, what it is. When it comes down to it, you can never leave it into the refs’ hands. It’s all good, though.”
Palmer said in his letter to Mixon that the “integrity of the game and its officials is the responsibility of everyone involved in the NFL.”
“During the appeal hearing, you stated what you meant by your statements referring to the officials,” Palmer said in the letter. “As you know, statements can be interpreted differently by every individual and it seems like you clearly understand the weight and detriment of public criticism towards officials can be, given how impactful your platform is as a player, which I appreciate.”

John Madden, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, had a 103-32-7 record in 10 NFL seasons coaching the Oakland Raiders and led them to a win in the Super Bowl in the 1976 season before his lengthy run as an NFL broadcaster.

Joe Buck will call his first nationally televised baseball game since 2021 on opening day.
Buck will be in the booth for ESPN when the New York Yankees host the Milwaukee Brewers on March 27 at noon.
Buck was Fox Sports’ lead MLB announcer from 1996 through 2021 and called 24 World Series. He joined ESPN in 2022 to call “Monday Night Football.”
YES Network analyst Joe Girardi and Brewers analyst Bill Schroeder also will be in the booth with Buck.
“Opening Day has always been a signature day on the sports calendar and, personally, it remains special,” Buck said in a statement. “ESPN approached me with this one-off opportunity to help launch the season and it was a quick ‘yes.’”
Buck’s last national baseball broadcast was Nov. 2, 2021, when the Atlanta Braves beat the Houston Astros in Game 6 of the World Series. He did a game with Chip Caray last season when the St. Louis Cardinals faced the Chicago Cubs, a game carried on the Cardinals’ regional sports network feed.
