Support Colorado Proposition 127 to protect our mountain lions and bobcats

I am writing to express my strong support for Colorado Proposition 127, which seeks to protect mountain lions and bobcats from cruel trophy hunting practices. Unfortunately, opposition groups have mobilized, often spreading misleading information about the measure. These groups have raised over $1.6 million through Oct. 9, with significant contributions from out-of-state outfitters and hunting groups from Wisconsin, Michigan and Idaho. Their financial interests are clear; they prioritize trophy hunting for profit over the well-being of Colorado’s wildlife.

Disturbingly, some organizations that should advocate for wildlife protection have come out neutral or against Proposition 127, despite the facts. Groups like Cats Are Not Trophies have provided critical insight into the inhumane practices these species face, including chasing with hounds and trophy hunting purely for sport. These animals play an essential role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by regulating prey populations and ensuring ecological balance.

Mountain lions, for instance, help control populations of deer and elk, which prevents overgrazing that can lead to habitat destruction. Bobcats, too, play a critical role in controlling smaller prey populations, keeping the food web balanced. Disrupting these species through unnecessary hunting can cause ripple effects across entire ecosystems, leading to biodiversity loss and environmental degradation.

The opposition’s claims are not about science or conservation; they are about continuing outdated practices that harm Colorado’s natural heritage. By voting yes on Proposition 127, we can ensure that mountain lions and bobcats are protected for generations to come, preserving the biodiversity that makes our state special.

I urge my fellow Coloradans to support this crucial measure and stand with conservation over profit.
