A 40-year-old tenant suffered severe burns when a fire broke out Saturday night in a Warren apartment building, according to firefighters.

The Warren Fire Department reported the victim was rescued from inside a second-floor unit that had caught fire on the 15000 block of Republic Avenue, in the Nine Mile/Hoover roads area.

According to a news release, fire crews responded about 7:26 p.m. to the address and spotted light smoke coming from the four-unit apartment building. They soon discovered an active fire, fire officials said.

“Firefighters quickly made entry into the second-story apartment and were met with heavy smoke and flames concentrated in the kitchen area,” officials said.

While fire crews were making suppression operations and had the blaze knocked down at 7:38 p.m., firefighters encountered the victim and brought him to safety. The fire was fully extinguished by 8 p.m., the fire department release stated.

The victim was reported to have severe burns to a “significant portion” of his body. Warren fire paramedics transported him to Detroit Receiving Hospital. At that point, the fire department reported the patient’s care was transferred to the hospital’s emergency department staff and no further information would be released.

Warren fire officials said the blaze caused smoke and water damage to the other three units in the building.
