BRUNSWICK – The city’s economic development director announced this week that the new hotel proposed for Brunswick Town Center is expected to be open to the public in time for the 2017 holiday season.
In light of the fact that members of the city’s Planning Commission unanimously approved detailed site plans for the proposed 84-room, four-story Comfort Suites hotel April 20, Community and Economic Development Director Grant Aungst said construction is expected to begin on a 5.2-acre site at Town Center late this spring.
“The developer has been working diligently with the administration and continues to work hard to meet our expectations,” Aungst said, noting that developer Robert Slaybaugh was named the Choice Properties 2016 Builder of the Year for his commitment and attention to detail on the properties he builds.
Aungst said the 57,850-square-foot hotel, which is part of the Choice Hotels line, will be a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified building and will feature a conference center, indoor pool and outdoor patio area with a seating area and fire pit.
Since revised plans for the project were presented to the planning commission earlier this year, Aungst noted the developer has also elected to add outdoor balconies to the rooms located on the east and west ends of the building and has also added architectural elements to make the building’s exterior more aesthetically pleasing.
Aungst said both the city’s business and residential communities have anticipated the construction of a new hotel in the city for several years.
“Until now, we just didn’t have a hotel in the city that is a long-term stay hotel,” he said, noting that the Sleep Inn on South Carpenter Road caters to more short-term clientele.
With the Comfort Suites hotel, Aungst said, businesses located throughout the city and in the industrial park will have a location for vendors, suppliers and other clientele to stay when they are visiting locations in the city.
“These businesses used to have to send their clients elsewhere to stay, but now they will be able to stay right here in the city in a quality hotel,” he said.
The Comfort Suites hotel is one of three projects scheduled for the second phase of construction in Brunswick Town Center. The first project, an assisted living facility, is currently under construction just south of Town Center Boulevard.
The 101-unit senior adult living center, which has been named Danbury of Brunswick, will consist of 32 memory care units and 69 assisted living units.
The third project slated for the second phase of development is a 102-unit luxury apartment complex.
Plans for the complex not only call for an interior courtyard to be constructed between the buildings, but a gazebo that will be constructed near a pedestrian trail that will extend from the complex to Town Center Boulevard.
Developer Bill Lemmon said the units, all of which will feature patios and balconies, are expected to rent for $800 to $1,050 per month.
