Man gets five years for burglary attempt
Greeley found by police wielding hammer

MEDINA – A city resident received five years in prison March 23 for attempting to burglarize a neighbor’s residence last July.

Steven Greeley, 37, was convicted after a January trial of one count of attempted aggravated burglary, a second-degree felony.

Greeley attempted to enter his neighbor’s home on East Homestead Street around 3 a.m. July 20, which was occupied by a single woman. He claimed at trial he was abusing his prescription medications for bipolar disorder by mixing him with alcohol, causing him to forget the incident.

Police reportedly saw Greeley carrying a hammer when they found Greeley, leading the state to charge him with attempted aggravated burglary.

The victim spoke during the sentencing hearing, stating she believes she was targeted for living alone and that she is considering selling her home due to the anxiety she has from the incident.

“He will never understand what he did that night,” she said. “I feel like a prisoner in my own home.”

One issue Common Pleas Judge Joyce Kimbler brought up was that the defendant seems to have denied his guilt until now and that the court had to revoke his bond in December due to his violating the terms of his house arrest.
