Drivers, for your own sake and mine, please slow down
letter to the editor
To the Editor:
I was almost run over yesterday by an Acura in the parking lot of Buehler’s River Styx supermarket. Every year, as I run our beagle, Benny, around town to Spokes Café, One Lucky Dog Bakery and then up to Chipotle for lunch, at least one car almost runs us over. We always use the crosswalks and we stop jogging to wait for the light that gives us the right-of-way.

NPR reported that pedestrian deaths because of being hit by cars increased 11 percent in 2016. Most of the car drivers were either illegally drunk or on their cell phones. One third of the pedestrians were illegally drunk. In light of the woman who was run over in downtown Medina and in critical condition in the hospital the weekend of Jan. 30, pedestrians in the crosswalk have the right-of-way. As far as I know, the police are still looking for the driver of the pickup truck that hit her.

Drivers, for your own sake, please slow down. NPR noted that a pedestrian hit by a car going 20 mph has a 10 percent chance of dying. A pedestrian hit at 40 mph, according to the same story, has a 90 percent chance of dying.

Benny, our beagle, doesn’t drink booze and it is impossible for me to drink and jog as alcohol is too relaxing. So, both of us are always working to be as safe as we can be. If I get killed, my bride will just be a wealthier widow. But, if Benny gets killed, because she considers him her baby, her hurt and wrath may well be unquenchable.
