America is getting into more and more trouble with Trump
letter to the editor

To the Editor:

America just turned a dangerous corner with the House passage of Trumpcare. Perhaps this bill will never become law and its harm may be averted, but that will not mitigate the moral responsibility of those who voted for it. This is one of the most critical moments in recent American political history. This bill is an act of monstrous cruelty that should stain those who supported it to the end of their days.

Trump’s budget director, Mick Mulvaney, said giving food to poor children and poor elders has no profit and can’t be justified. Pious Vice President Mike Pence said we need more Jesus care; people who live Godly lives don’t worry about doctors. I think there’s a special place in hell for those who attend a national prayer breakfast in the morning and take away health care from the most vulnerable in the afternoon. Jesuit priest James Martin said, “I will never understand how politicians who call themselves Christian can read the gospels and then treat the poor and sick like dirt.” Got me too, Father!

But the prize goes to Speaker Paul Ryan, who said with a cruel smirk, “If millions lose insurance, it’s because they didn’t want it.” That was just before he shut down all access to him – all phones, faxes, offices. But neither rain nor sleet nor snow, he’s home on break now and his address is Paul Ryan, 700 St. Lawrence Ave, Janesville, WI 53545. As Speaker of the House of Representatives, he needs to avail himself to citizens and our opinions. I dropped him a postcard suggesting he is guilty of treason and I hope every American who is not a billionaire will join me to express his or her personal opinion.

Meanwhile, Vive le France! Good to see they learned from our tragic mistake. Our POTUS made a fool of himself and an embarrassment for us by proclaiming the UN a fun club. A small-minded and self-obsessed vulgarian who uses his own charity organization to launder money through and to buy himself paintings of himself is incapable of even conceiving how much work that more than 50,000 UN employees do every year, fighting epidemics of disease and monitoring the effects of climate change and providing for the basic needs of people left behind by selfish capitalists and the strong-arm dictators that Trump worships.

We’re in trouble, folks. I hope we don’t need to repeat our 20th century world history lesson to resolve this crisis. If we do, leave my grandchildren out of it.
