MEDINA — There are a few new things coming to the fairgrounds this year, including new contests and a traveling memorial in honor of war veterans.

Making its county fair premiere is Hot Dog Pig Racing, where piglets (and dachshunds in hot dog costumes) will race five times a day from Tuesday-Saturday. Final show times are still to be determined and the races will be held behind the community center.

Also debuting this year will be a hot dog eating contest Wednesday, Aug. 2 at 8 p.m. in the pavilion. The cost to register is $10 and there will be contests for men, women and children under 16. Participants can sign up at the Donut Hut, who is sponsoring the event, at its stand south of the main grandstand.

The Fair Board held a hay bale decorating contest for the first time this year, which was inspired by seeing entries from the Lorain County Fair over the last few years, said Pam Oberholtzer of the Medina County Fair Board.

“They’re pretty ornate. There is a lot of work that goes into them,” she said.

Participation was limited to 10 entries, with participants forced to keep their creations no higher than 2 bales tall, 12 feet high and 15 feet long. The bale entries will be on display at the fairgrounds’ entrances all week.

On display all week on the west side of the Community Center will be the Eyes of Freedom: Lima Company Memorial, created in honor of the 23 members of the Marine Reserves 3/25 company headquartered in Brook Park that died in Iraq in 2005. The memorial, which features life-size portraits of all those who died in a series of panels, travels across the country and was last displayed at the VFW National Convention in New Orleans the week before the Medina County Fair.

The piece was created by Columbus artist Anita Miller in 2008 and was first displayed at the Ohio Statehouse.

Also new this year are demonstrations at the home building (building 22) including one on cake fondant at 6 p.m. and another on cake decorating at 8 p.m. on both Monday, July 31 and Wednesday, Aug. 2. Oberholtzer said there may be a beer brewing demonstration as well, but it has not been scheduled.
