Orientation and pictures should not be held when parents work
Letter to the editor
To the Editor:
I am hoping someone can help shed some light on a concern I have. School starts in Brunswick on Aug 16. Willetts Middle School is having picture day and orientation on Aug 10 during the day.

Yes, before school starts they are having picture day.

I am told this may be due to the kids getting pictures taken for a school ID. To my knowledge however, they are the only school in the district doing this. In addition to this, it’s all during the day from 9-3 when most parents are working.

We are constantly told, and I echo this sentiment, that parents should be involved in their kid’s lives more. It makes it much harder to do when schools pull moves like this. It’s like they intentionally tried to think of the most inconvenient time they possibly could. Orientation makes kids feel better to walk the school first, with their parents, to feel more at ease and to get to know the school. When they have it during the time most parents work, they aren’t going to be able to do that. In addition, they won’t get their picture taken for class pictures.

I find it disheartening that I have to write to the paper about a subject like this, but I wrote to the school and did not receive a response as to why this was planned like this. I am also curious as to why Willetts is the only school doing this. Why would it be different for other Brunswick schools? That makes zero sense. Isn’t there any type of checks and balances to make sure that events like this aren’t planned in this ridiculous way? I would really like to know who in their right mind thought this was a good decision. I welcome any representative from the school board or Willetts to write in and answer this letter. Thank you.
