This week I am talking Cleveland sports. Mostly anyway. Hey, I am may not be as good as the other Bruce (Drennan) talking ball, but I am not chopped liver let me tell you. I used to be a big fan of the greatest Bruce athlete that ever lived, too. But then that Bruce changed his name to Caitlyn. Let's not go there, I promised to stick to sports.
As you know I am a diehard Cleveland and Ohio State fan. Hey, I played a few sports back in the olden days. And yes, Bruce Drennan, I do know what "the ducks are on the pond" means. So I am fully qualified to speak.
My new son-in law, a native Clevelander and sports fan, texted me an interesting question last week: "Rank them: OSU spring game, Indians game, Cavs playoff game, Blue Jackets playoff?" All were playing same weekend. That was a tough one!
After considerable thought and taking time to weigh my texting words very carefully (about 5 seconds which is a lot for me) here was my response: (1) OSU spring game (2) Indians game (3) Cavs playoff game (4) Columbus Blue Jackets' first NHL playoff game.
Yes, I said it. I picked the Buckeyes' spring game over my beloved Cleveland teams. I am also a lifelong Buckeye fan and frankly just prefer watching football on television to any other sport. If the Browns had been in the question they would have gone to No. 2 or maybe even No. 1 if they improve as much as I think they are going to this year.
I find baseball a bit tedious to watch on TV - I can't keep my finger off the DVR fast forward button. I love reading about them every day though and it is a lot of fun to see them in person. Mostly because I love the nachos, hot dogs, peanuts and beer. Cracker Jack for dessert. Word of advice, don't sit too close to me after an Indians game.
Pro basketball, I have just gotten bored with it. Never would have expected I would ever say that. I used to play basketball every day, coached for many years and had season Cavs seats at the old Coliseum. Bingo! Loved Joe Tait. But the new breed leaves me a bit cold, just not feeling it like I used to. Sure, I still watched the championship series and was thrilled for the people of northeast Ohio.
Hockey gives me a headache on TV. I imagine the beer and junk food would make that better in person. But my son, our new Publisher Mike Trogdon, is a huge Blue Jackets fan. Man that kid could skate like the wind on our frozen farm pond. If I would have found him a hockey team to play on somewhere we might both be retired and living on easy street this very day. Alas, I didn't and made him play football and basketball like the old man. Now he's running my newspapers. Bad parenting.
My wife and I even watched the end of a Blue Jackets hockey game last weekend to give moral support for Mike. He ended up depressed and I ended up with a headache. But I did each nacho chips and cheese while watching from home, but just drank water. No wonder I had a headache.
I am starting to like the Cavs coach though. When they asked him how he was preparing himself personally for the playoffs, he said "I got 18 wings fried hard at Applebees." Yeah, finally a Cav I can relate to. So let's humor my Managing Editor David Sickels (a diehard fan) and ask a Cavs question for our Weekly Online Poll. Go to our website and help us learn the answer.
Will the Cleveland Cavaliers win another NBA championship this year? Let me know so I can get my bets done. Oh that's right, all bets are off for us Bruces these days.
Last week people enjoyed voting on our question of "Who was the primary culprit in the United Airlines bumping incident?" Not surprisingly, 44.0 percent of you blamed United Airlines for not showing enough concern for their customers. The airline industry practice of overbooking was blamed by 20.6 percent. The bumped passenger was blamed himself by 18.6 percent of you for being out of control. Finally, 16.8 percent thought that the security guards used excessive force.
Okay I am out of here. A lot of sports to watch and beer to drink. So many nachos, so little time.
