To the Editor:
As a minister, retired veteran and a survivor of an environmentally-acquired illness, I stand in total opposition to the NEXUS pipeline and the entire system to which it is connected. Once one becomes educated about it, the ugly truth becomes blatant.
The fracking industry presents a huge moral issue because of the harm, both short-term and permanent, that the entire infrastructure wreaks upon present and future generations through the intentional pollution of our environment. According to Wilma Subra, environmental safety researcher, this is a new technology that is “being allowed to be developed basically unregulated... releasing huge quantities of very toxic chemicals... contaminating soil, ground water, surface water, vegetation, wildlife... all of the food chains... being done in the name of energy independence.”
It is horrifying that the research on health effects and the cries of its many victims are being totally ignored because of monetary greed and political payoffs. Societies will be judged on how well they cared for the needy among us. The NEXUS pipeline flunks the Judeo-Christian commandment to “love your neighbor as yourself.” It will destroy God’s creation, to which all of life is inextricably linked.
Sustainable Medina County is the only group in the county who has taken on the mission of protecting everyone from the NEXUS pipeline. See their website at sustainablemedinacounty.org or Facebook for more information and to see how you can help.
