It is comforting to know that if needed, EMS will be there
letter to the editor

To the Editor:

When we buy something, we take it home and use it. It usually gives us much pleasure. This is not true with insurance. We hope never to use it, despite its outrageous cost – especially for older people.

Some years ago, our dryer caught fire. We called the fire department, and, within a couple of minutes, they were at our house. No waiting, no paper work, no questions asked (except our address). The same is true with the Emergency Medical Service. They arrive at the stricken patient’s home in four or five minutes – or sooner – and, in many cases save his or her life. Again, no waiting, no paper work, no questions asked (except your address).

The cost? Certainly not the outrageous costs that life insurance, property insurance or vehicle insurance companies make us pay. The cost for the “no waiting, no paper work, no questions asked (except your address)” is only pennies a day. Most people spill more than that in their daily habits and get nothing in return.

I have always supported fire and EMS levies with the hopes of never having to use either of them, but life brings us reality now and then. As we age, that reality becomes more plausible. It is comforting to know that if needed, EMS will be there in short order without questions or paper work – just life-giving assistance. Nothing could put a price on this kind of service, so the pennies a day we pay for it is so little that we won’t even notice it.

I hope everyone in town joins me in voting for the EMS levy on May 2. All you have to do is to remember the date – May 2 – and your address, just in case you need their services.
