MEDINA – A woman received a suspended jail sentence and two years of probation after pleading guilty to a reduced charge for stabbing her former fiance in the stomach, which led him to be flown to MetroHealth Hospital.
Jamie Johnson, 26, was originally charged with felonious assault, a second-degree felony, for the July 28 incident at a Medina residence, but it was reduced to a misdemeanor count of assault.
She said during a Nov. 28 court hearing she was pregnant at the time of the stabbing and was arguing with her fiance, the father of her child, over something their dog did. During this, “her hormones got the best of her” and she threw a butcher knife at him, which hit his stomach.
The man was originally taken to Medina Hospital and later flown to Metrohealth Hospital. He was present in the courtroom and spoke during the hearing, saying the incident was an accident.
“Having a butcher knife in your belly doesn’t happen by accident,” said Common Pleas Judge Christopher Collier.
Johnson, who delivered her child a few weeks prior, received a suspended jail sentence but was ordered to attend counseling before she can have contact with the victim.
“I want to make sure he doesn’t get fileted again,” Collier said.
