Medina Hockey Club’s only loss this season came on the road at the hands of the Jackson Polar Bears.

On Jan. 21, Jackson came to Medina’s ice with its unbeaten record and sitting atop the league. Medina rose to the challenge, in front of a large crowd of students, beating the Polar Bears in the Bees’ first overtime challenge of the season.

Early in the first period, Jackson took a roughing penalty, and Medina scored on their first shot of the game when Robbie Taylor converted a pass from Cooper Schmit. Medina kept the pressure on holding the Polar Bears to only one shot in the period and with five minutes to play, Ryan Cole scored with assists from Matt Jay and Ben Schroth closing out the scoring for the first stanza.

When the Bees found themselves in penalty trouble in the second period, they switched to focusing on defense. Medina did manage to find the net late in the second when Cal Parnell scored with an assist from Cole. Unfortunately, a minute later, Jackson put their first goal up sending the teams to intermission with the score 3-1.

The third period belonged to Jackson as Medina was busy killing off penalties and Jackson scored twice to send the game into overtime. Medina came out strong, peppering the Jackson goalie with seven shots in the first minute and a half before Taylor scored the game winner with Schmit assisting again.

Sunday had Medina traveling to Fremont to take on the Ice Wolves and neither the drama of the night before or the travel distance caused problems for the Bees as they won 6-3. Sammy Burke handled the net minder duties and in spite of giving up an early goal, he stayed strong and took home a victory.

Cole was first to score for Medina with assists from Jack Jenkins and Sch roth. Schroth put in the next two goals with assists from Danny Dzhubinskiy, Parnell and Cole. After another Fremont goal, J.T. Korpusik scored for Medina with assists from Taylor and Dzhubinskiy. Two minutes later Parnell got himself a goal with an assist from Patrick McGinty.

Medina’s only goal in the third period came from an unassisted effort from Cooper Schmit.

Medina’s next home game is Sunday, Feb. 5 at 2:40pm against the Lake Erie Tigers which includes a celebration of Medina’s seniors.
