Wadsworth Mayor Robin Laubaugh
The Wadsworth American Legion and VFW, together with Wadsworth City Schools, have planned a tribute to all Wadsworth veterans and invite those that have graduated from Wadsworth High School to take part in football activities associated with the Sept. 1 Grizzlies football game.
Those interested in attending the team meal on Thursday and finding out more about the tribute should contact Joe Rodgers at the American Legion at 330-334-1119. There is limited space, so reservations are necessary.
Ohio Historical Markers Program
The City of Wadsworth’s first Ohio Historical Marker was recognized in a dedication ceremony at the Johnson House Museum last Friday. It is the first historical marker of its kind located within the city limits.
The closest existing marker can be found at Sky Park, in the township. Ohio Historical Markers identify, commemorate and honor the important people, places and events that have contributed to the state’s rich history. The Ohio Historical Markers Program, administered by the Ohio Historical Society, is a valuable educational tool that informs Ohio residents and visitors about significant aspects of Ohio’s past. In order to qualify for a marker, certain specifications must be met that distinguish the location as having been associated with events that made a significant contribution in history, with persons no longer living who made significant contributions to the culture, or a building that has distinctive characteristics of a style, period or method of construction.
This past year, on behalf of the Wadsworth Area Historical Society, Bob DeLong began the application process and coordinated it with the Ohio History Connection to request a marker for the City of Wadsworth at the Johnson House Museum. Many hours of research into the history of the Johnson House Museum and the Carriage Factory that was once located across the street were completed by Bob and Roger Havens. The Ohio Connection is very meticulous about documentation and substantiation of historical facts. I am grateful to those that generously sponsored the plaque: The American Legion Post 170, The Whitlam Family, the Wadsworth Area Historical Society and the Ohio History Connection Organization; and of course to Bob and Roger for the hours of work they donated to the project. An up-close look at the marker will reveal the names of the individuals and organizations that sponsored it, and a description with the year the marker was erected.
Until next week…
