NORTH ROYALTON – Another ward councilman has expressed intent to retain his seat.
Ward 2 Councilman Gary Petrusky, one of the six ward councilpeople up for re-election Nov. 7, has pulled petitions, planning to seek a final two-year term.
Per North Royalton ordinance, elected officials may only serve 12 consecutive years in any one office due to term limits. Petrusky is coming to the end of his fifth term and 10th year in Ward 2.
He said council and the administration have made an immense amount of headway the past decade, momentum he still wants to be part of to help continue to carry the city forward.
“I really think that over the last 10 years, we have made a lot of strides to bring North Royalton up to date in a lot of processes: some of the things the building department is doing, finance is more automated, the new city hall with better communications with residents as we now have improved Internet and phone systems. We are making some strides to put us where we need to be as a municipality,” Petrusky said.
He cited roads and stormwater issues, specifically, as other examples of improvement.
“Some of these issues have subsided or completely disappeared. I really think we are making good strides to get North Royalton where it needs to be. We are still finding better ways to improve,” he added. “And it’s nice partnering with the schools and the unity there.”
Petrusky said he enjoys serving in this capacity and is motivated for a final term because it’s his way of giving back.
“I enjoy it,” he said, “helping residents and giving back to the community.”
Each ward incumbent and opponent, should any come forward, must secure 50 valid signatures from registered voters in their specific ward to formally file as a candidate. The filing deadline is Aug. 9.
As of now, incumbents Ward 1 Councilman John Nickell, Petrusky, Ward 3 Councilman Dan Langshaw, Ward 5 Councilwoman Cheryl Hannan and Ward 6 Councilman Dan Kasaris have all pulled petitions intending to seek re-election, and so far, it appears all are unopposed.
Council President Larry Antoskiewicz is in the middle of his second four-year term so is not up for re-election this November.
Neither is Mayor Bob Stefanik, also in the middle of a four-year term, his final term as mayor as he cannot seek re-election in 2019 due to term limits.
