Mary Lou Cavanagh, 72, passed away Nov. 22, 2016, after a courageous three-year battle against pancreatic cancer.
Mary Lou was born Jan. 5, 1944 to Frank and Mary Lou Sheehan outside Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, Mo. Though her parents were from Michigan, she came into this world at the Army base after her father was drafted to serve in WWII, and completed basic training at this site along the Mississippi. When Frank returned from Europe, they moved back to the Detroit, Mich. area, and the family grew to include her sisters Kathy, Peg and Jane, as well as brother Tim.
Mary Lou graduated from Birmingham High School and attended Michigan State University. She is survived by her beloved husband of 51 years, John Cavanagh. She was proud of her faith, and her family: children; John (Annemarie) Cavanagh, Katie (Jim) Kahut and Meghan (Randy) Zeimet. She will be fondly remembered by grandchildren Darcy, Devin, Daniel, Kyle, Ryan, Aidan and Colin. After raising her children, Mary Lou worked several part-time jobs before accepting a position with Westfield Insurance where she worked until retirement. A game of cards was quick to bring a smile to her face. She played in several bridge groups over the years, and taught her grandsons to play various cards. She loved a family gathering that included game time. Mary Lou was also an avid golfer who participated in ladies and couples leagues and appreciated her time on the links. Besides cards and golf, she enjoyed fitness classes and vacation travel, especially annual trips to Hilton Head with friends. Mary Lou knew how to dance! Her family has fond memories of celebrations that included Mom and Dad on the dance floor. It was mesmerizing to see her beauty and grace in motion.
Mary Lou is preceded in death by her father, Frank Sheehan; and her sister, Kathy (Fred) Shepherd.
