MEDINA – After a two-year span without a big music act, Gary Allen will headline and The Brothers Osborne will open at the Medina County Fair Aug. 3.

“We thought this would be a nice fit,” said Pam Oberholtzer of the Medina County Fair Board. “Our fair likes the current acts.”

Gary Allan has released 10 albums, including one of his greatest hits, since he was first signed to a record deal in 1996. He has four No. 1 songs, including “Man to Man”, “Tough Little Boys” (both 2003), “Nothing On But the Radio” (2004) and “Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain)” (2013), and seven more in the top 10, including “Watching Airplanes.”

The Brothers Osborne, who so far have released the album “Pawn Shop” and several singles, recently received two Academy of County Music Awards, including vocal duo of the year and new vocal duo of the year. Their most recent single, “That Ain’t My Fault,” was released in January.

Oberholtzer said the fair board works with booking agent Variety Attractions to find potential acts and then sees if the performers are on tour and if they have a free evening. One challenge that has come up in the last couple of years is that many artists are already booked to perform at other area venues, including Blossom Music Center and the Hard Rock Rocksino.

In 2015, The Band Perry, who was scheduled to perform at the fair, backed out of their fair date a couple of weeks before their performance due to a band member’s illness. Last year, the fair board chose not to have a big entertainment act, citing issues booking a country act.

Tickets for this year’s show will go on sale May 6 and can be purchased online at medina-fair.com, by phone or at the fair office. Oberholtzer said tickets can also be purchased by downloading the Ticketracker app on iTunes or Google Play.

Beer tent
For the first time ever, fairgoers will be able to purchase beer and drink it either in a fenced-off pavilion or while watching grandstand entertainment.

Oberholtzer said sales in the beer tent, located north of the grandstand, will start at 4 p.m. every day but Sunday, and open containers will not be allowed on the rest of the fairgrounds. Those with tickets to grandstand events will be allowed to take their drinks to their track or grandstand seats.

Volunteers from Buckeye Sports Boosters will be handling beer sales and will receive the necessary training, Oberholtzer said.

A fair committee assigned to look into beer sales reportedly looked into procedures at numerous other fairs to see what would best for Medina, she said.
