WADSWORTH – Students have spent the last couple of months enjoying a carefree summer, but it will soon be time to hit the books and head back to school. School district officials have been working hard to ensure a good start to the school year.
Wadsworth City Schools will begin its 2017-18 school year later this month with grades 1-12 starting school Thursday, Aug. 24 and all-day kindergarten and preschool beginning Tuesday, Aug. 29.
“We hope your enjoyed your summer,” said Superintendent Andrew Hill. “We are anxiously awaiting the beginning of the new school year and our opportunity to work with you and your children.”
Members of the district were hard at work making improvements to buildings and grounds during the summer. The turf installation at the high school track stadium has been completed as has the north entrance to Art Wright Stadium. The addition of more than 20 parking spaces at Overlook Elementary School will be completed before school starts and a multipurpose facility at the high school will be completed by the end of September.
Some new courses will be offered at the high school including Advanced Engineering and Programming A and B – each is a semester class. Other new classes to be offered at the high school include Architectural Technical Graphics and Interior Design, Engineering Technical Graphics and Advanced Placement Computer Science.
Hill also added the five educators who spent a week in the spring at NASA are looking forward to incorporating what they learned on their trip into their daily lessons this year.
Also, in an effort to prevent addiction and get students help they need, the district will be conducting random drug testing on high school and middle school students for the first time. Students eligible to be tested are all athletes and all students involved in an extracurricular activity that isn’t tied to a letter grade. Students who obtain a parking pass can also be tested and parents can opt their children in to be tested.
Hill added that families can find information on how to access bus stop information through the district’s new E-Link program on the district homepage – www.wadsworthschools.org.
Families can also find a schedule of events leading up to the beginning of the new school year on the district homepage. The schedule details events ranging from schedule pick and open houses to the first day of school for students.
