Spike Lee heading to Vineyard film fest

Legendary director Spike Lee (inset) and journalist Soledad O’Brienare among the stars expected to attend the 14th annual Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival next month. The film fest, which takes place Aug. 8-13, will feature screenings including “Babies Behind Bars,’’ a documentary in which O’Brien takes viewers to a women’s prison where inmates are allowed to keep their newborn babies while they’re incarcerated; “Muhammad Ali: The People’s Champ,’’ a biographical tribute directed by Coodie Simmonsand Chike Ozah; “Southside With You’’ a film written and directed by Richard Tanne that’s set in 1989 Chicago and tells the story of the first date between Barack and Michelle Obama; and writer and director Deborah Riley Draper’s “Olympic Pride, American Prejudice,’’ which chronicles the experiences of 18 African-American athletes who competed in the 1936 Olympic Games. On Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. Lee will lead a discussion with director Nate Parker and actress Aja Naomi Kingabout their groundbreaking film, “The Birth of a Nation.’’ For more information and a complete schedule of festival events, visit www.mvaaff.com.
