Sadly, it’s September and the end of summer is here. As the kids are heading back to school, the Massachusetts Chess Association’s scholastic program begins. MACA’s goal is to find scholastic champions in the age groups — 8 and under, 11 and under, and 14 and under — and for high school students. The age-dependent championships are by invitation, and the high school championship is open to all. The 10 players invited in each age group are the five highest-rated players in each group, the winners of the four qualifying events, and the winners of the Spiegel Cup Series.

The qualifying events are always very well attended. For complete information, see Masschess.org/Scholastics.

The 42nd Chess Olympiad has started in Baku, Azerbaijan. It’s a 11-round, swiss event that will run until Sept. 14. The US team is the 2nd-highest-rated with a 2740 average. They are right behind the Russians (2760) and just a tad ahead of the Chinese (2735). The team consists of US champion Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Wesley So, Ray Robson, and Brandeis’s Sam Shankland. Though very strong, I think we are playing for 3rd. The Russians are very determined to capture their first gold medal since 2002, and the defending champs, Chinese, are completely focused on repeating.

Coming events: SE Mass CC, Sept. 11 Memorial, Sept. 7, 14, 21, 28, Oct. 5, Southeast Mass Chess Club, United Methodist Church, 16 East Bacon St., Plainville, www.SouthEastMassChess.org: Harold Dondis Memorial, Boylston CC, Sept. 10, 40 Norris St., Cambridge, www.BoylstonChess.org;
