The Cape Cod Baseball League is a collegiate summer league that has sent close to 300 players on the big leagues, including stars like Jacoby Ellsbury, Nomar Garciaparra, Ron Darling, Matt Wieters, Andrew Miller, Tim Lincecum, Mark Texeira, and Barry Zito.
Every summer the question is whether today’s Cape league stars could be tomorrow’s major league stars.
Keep an eye after the summer on Cole Freeman (above making the tag), playing second base for the Wareham Gatemen and leading the league in hitting, up around .370 as of early August.
He was drafted this year in the 18th round by the Dodgers, but has already decided to return for his senior year at Louisiana State University, where last year he hit .329 hitting ninth.
“A dream come true for me and my family when I was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers,’’ Freeman wrote in a message posted to his Facebook page. “I can’t thank them enough for the opportunity they gave me to live a childhood dream but I have decided to come back to LSU for my senior year. Looking forward to getting back to work with my teammates, playing in front of the best fans in college baseball and getting back on the road to Omaha!’’
