Heed warning of Hiroshima’s ex-mayor

Re “Hiroshima’s ex-mayor pleads with Trump on nuclear issue’’ (Jan. 24): In the 1980s, when President Reagan talked about limited nuclear war, Carl Sagan warned that detonating even a small percentage of the world’s nuclear weapons could create nuclear winter and thus threaten our survival. It is imperative that we abolish this ultimate weapon, not upgrade it.

Throughout history, combatants have resorted to their most powerful weapon. We now risk annihilation of all. If the pen is mightier than the sword, perhaps statesmanship, diplomacy, and building alliances will prove mightier than death, destruction, and war.
