Judd’s reading of poem was a march highlight, not a lowlight

I agree with Joan Vennochi’s assertion that Michael Moore’s speech was more useful and effective than Madonna’s at the Women’s March on Washington (“Michael Moore’s call to action,’’ Opinion, Jan. 24).

However, Vennochi’s commentary on the words delivered by actress Ashley Judd showed her ignorance of the spoken-word performance Judd chose to give during her time on stage. Judd recited the poem “I Am a Nasty Woman,’’ written by 19-year-old Nina Donovan. Donovan hails from Tennessee, as does Judd.

I was at the march in Washington, and I found Judd’s performance to be one of the most moving and powerful speeches that day. Judd began by stating that she was bringing us the words of this 19-year-old, and I was impressed by this young woman, and grateful to her, for taking on the misogyny of our new president in such an artful and emboldened way.
