Cavaliers forward Kevin Love is experiencing concussion-like symptoms and has been ruled out of Sunday’s Game 7 in Boston.
The Cavaliers announced the decision Saturday, the day after Love suffered a head-on collision with Jayson Tatum in Game 6.
Love left the game after the blow, which sent him to the floor clutching his head in the first quarter, and he didn’t return. Tatum stayed in and, according to coach Brad Stevens after the game, seemed fine.
Love is averaging 13.9 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game in these playoffs.
Love is in the concussion protocol, which was a matter of some confusion earlier in the day during a conference call with Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue. Lue initially said Love was in the protocol, then backtracked and said he wasn’t sure if that was the case.
Without Love, Cleveland faces a road elimination game without its most proven offensive player behind LeBron James. Love averaged 17.6 points and 9.3 rebounds during an All-Star regular season. He hasn’t replicated that in the playoffs, but he’s helped Cleveland on the boards and is another scoring threat when James demands extra attention.
Larry Nance Jr. and Jeff Green figure to get extra minutes in Game 7, as they did in Game 6 once Love went out.
“We would guard obviously a little bit differently with Kevin in the game, but obviously with the different matchups that they’re playing and everything else, when they went small, I thought those guys all reacted very effectively,’’ Stevens said on Friday night. “Jeff Green was great tonight. [Kyle] Korver came in and made some shots and did what he does. George Hill was tremendous. Other guys picked up the slack for him being out.’’
The difference is now they’ll have to do it on the road, where the Cavs’ role players have struggled.
Love has a concussion history, having suffered one in March and another during the 2016 Finals, which caused him to miss a game.
