Reuben, meet bagel

Fresh bagels and Reuben sandwiches are both widely beloved, but they’re rarely combined. Luckily, the Bagel Place in Newton is bucking that trend with a well-executed Reuben ($6.99) served on a selection of baked-daily bagels. The small shop — the second location for the bakery based in Burlington, Vt. — opened in January and has seen increased business each month, according to general manager Joseph Malley. The Reuben is among the popular sandwich offerings, along with a turkey club and Baja breakfast sandwich. Boar’s Head pastrami gets topped with crunchy sauerkraut and tangy Thousand Island dressing, which soaks into the chewy bagel to make a messy but comforting lunch. The Bagel Place sells its namesake item by the dozen as well, offering unique varieties like sriracha cheddar and Montreal Spice alongside classics like plain, poppy, and everything. Malley, whose family started the business in 2012, loves to experiment with new flavors and offers weekly specials, often sourcing ideas from customers in person and online — like a roasted red pepper bagel that was offered during a recent visit. Throw in Red Barn coffee and friendly service, and you have a successful cafe. For those who scoff at the idea of a Reuben on a bagel, Malley offers bread, but, as he puts it, “I think everyone’s accepted it by now.’’ JON MAEL
