A man in his 20s was shot to death on Nightingale Street in Dorchester Saturday evening, according to police.

The shooting, which happened shortly after 6:30 p.m., was Boston’s second homicide of 2017.

Police did not identify the victim, but they said he was dead at the scene. Officers are looking for suspects in the case.

Neighbors on the street said they peeked through windows and from behind cars after hearing two consecutive shots fired. Yvette Cotto, 51, who lives a few houses down from where the man died, said she wasn’t sure at first whether anyone was hit.

She called 911. Then, she said, she called her daughter.

“I called her to find out where she is,’’ Cotto said. “And where her friends were, where are all my boys. You want to know that anyone close to you isn’t on the street.’’

Cotto said she believes the victim had been working on a car when he was shot. She said she looked outside to see the hood of a BMW raised, with the victim crumpled to the ground nearby.

Police arrived with blue lights flashing shortly after.

Cotto watched the crime scene for most of Saturday night. She spoke to police and she found brief comfort in the fact that officials were so gentle as they removed the body.

On Sunday morning, the street was empty. A few people walked to church. Caution tape was left behind. Cotto’s daughter, Alethia Kindle, 19, said she has grown weary of violence.

“It’s sad, but I’m used to it,’’ Kindle said of the shooting.

Police asked anyone with information to call Boston homicide detectives at 617-343-4470. Community members can also call the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 800-494-TIPS or text the word ‘TIP’ to CRIME (27463).
