METHUEN — A citizen’s tip helped lead police to a 22-year-old Lawrence man who was arrested Saturday evening for the hit-and-run crash that killed an 11-year-old girl Thursday, according to police.
Steven Toro was charged with motor vehicle homicide for the death of Jadee Soto and faced other motor vehicle charges, including leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, Methuen police said.
“Tonight is a bittersweet moment for myself, as well as all those involved,’’ Captain Randy Haggar said at a news conference at the police station.
He would not comment on Toro’s driving record or say whether he has any prior arrests. Police have not received any information from the suspect, he said.
Toro is being held in jail on $100,000 bail and will be arraigned Monday in Lawrence District Court, Haggar said.
He was allegedly driving at a high rate of speed when he struck and killed Soto as she crossed Broadway with her father around 9:45 p.m., police said.
Toro is accused of failing to stop and fleeing in a dark-colored car down Broadway into Lawrence.
Soto was taken to Lawrence General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The child’s death sparked an outpouring of grief. She had finished her first day of school in Methuen just hours before her death. School officials recalled her “wide smile’’ and the “sparkle in her eye,’’ in a statement.
A memorial with a teddy bear and flowers was placed at the scene of the crash near Broadway and Kirk Street.
Methuen police made an aggressive appeal on social for the public to provide any information about the crash.
Help came from one “absolutely critical’’ tip that led police to Toro without incident on Newbury Street in Lawrence where he lives, Haggar said.
“Someone recognized the vehicle, someone recognized [Toro], and made contact with us,’’ he said.
Police recovered Toro’s car, which had damage on the left front headlight area consistent with the investigation at the scene, Haggar said.
Toro is also charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident resulting in death in order to avoid prosecution or evade apprehension, according to the release.
He is also charged with failure to yield, speeding, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, police said.
