Boston police have confiscated more than 500 guns in the city so far this year, the department says.

In total, 355 “crime guns’’ were seized during police operations on the streets, and 172 “surrendered/safeguarded’’ firearms have been recovered this year, for a total of 527 through the start of September, Boston police said.

“I’ve seen my officers take thousands of guns off the streets of Boston during my time as police commissioner, and I find it troubling that we keep seeing so many out there. Especially when they are in the hands of 14- and 15-year-old kids,’’ Boston police Commissioner William Evans said in a prepared statement Friday.

“These illegal firearms have no place in our communities or in the hands of teenagers,’’ Evans said. “I’m amazed at the work that’s being done by my officers, but we need everyone to be involved to help keep our communities safe from gun violence.’’

While no previous year-to-date statistics on the department’s gun recoveries are available, Boston police firearms seizures in 2017 are on track to surpass both 2016 and 2015.

In 2016, Boston police reported that 578 crime guns and 178 surrendered guns were seized, for a total of 756 guns taken off the street.

And in 2015, 494 crime guns and 196 surrendered guns were recovered by city police, for a total of 690 seized firearms.

The Police Department is now on pace to seize a total of around 790 guns by the end of 2017.

Officers this year have recovered guns in a wide variety of situations. Guns were seized during police investigations, traffic stops, and crimes in progress.

Boston police did not have official information on the specific types of firearms seized this year. However, most of the public reports on gun seizures show the recovery of handguns, many of which are often loaded when they are seized.
