The East Boston girls’ volleyball team entered Thursday’s Boston City League tournament semifinal against O’Bryant at Burke High boasting a 16-0 record and a North Division championship.
Those accolades alone are enough to make Jets coach Vanessa Bigby beam with pride, but she knows her team’s run is far from over. On Tuesday, they’ll have a chance to add a BCL tournament title, after defeating the Tigers, 3-0. They’ll match up in the final against Latin Academy, which took down South champion West Roxbury, 3-1, in the other semifinal on the same court.
The Jets, who have only dropped two sets this season, took the first set, 25-22, in what Bigby described as a back-and-forth affair. From there, it was smooth sailing.
“I wanted my girls to have the mentality that it was 0-0 every set, to make sure my girls didn’t let up,’’ Bigby said. “Every timeout after that first set, I kept telling them, ‘We haven’t won anything.’ ’’
East Boston junior cocaptain Cilianna Tavares led the attack, contributing six aces and six kills, three of which came in a 25-17 third-set victory.
“It almost felt like the opponent was giving up,’’ Bigby said. “We were racking up kills and gaining too much momentum.’’
Though Bigby’s squad has defeated Latin Academy twice this season, the coach maintains that her team will enter Tuesday’s championship matchup with a lot to prove. The Dragons will look to keep things going after defeating a West Roxbury squad that had dropped only one match on the year entering Thursday.
“They’ll certainly bring the heat, but we’re more than motivated enough to beat them one more time,’’ Rigby said. “These girls have already made me so proud, and it would be great to keep it going.’’
