The Patriots made their first signing of 2018 last week, agreeing to a one-year, $880,000 deal with running back and core special teams player Brandon Bolden, according to NFL Players Association records.

Bolden’s deal includes a $790,000 base salary (veteran minimum), $60,000 signing bonus, and $30,000 offseason workout bonus. Since Bolden qualifies for the NFL’s minimum salary benefit, his salary cap number will be $720,000.

Bolden is not guaranteed a roster spot in 2018, but it is likely. His deal comes with $170,000 fully guaranteed — the signing bonus and $110,000 of the base salary. The deal was signed on Tuesday, per records.

Bolden, who will be entering his seventh NFL season, only played 42 snaps on offense during the regular season while serving as the fifth running back, rushing 13 times for 67 yards and catching one pass for 7 yards. But Bolden’s 271 special teams snaps were fourth most on the Patriots, behind Jordan Richards, Jonathan Jones, and Johnson Bademosi. Bolden made eight special teams tackles, one behind Bademosi for the team lead

NFL free agency doesn’t begin until March 14, but teams can re-sign their own players at any time. The Patriots have three significant free agents — left tackle Nate Solder, cornerback Malcolm Butler, and running back Dion Lewis — as well as core special teamers Matthew Slater, Nate Ebner, Brandon King, Marquis Flowers, and Bademosi.
