New Mission recovers

In basketball, sometimes it doesn’t matter how you start, but how you finish.

This was the case for sixth-ranked New Mission, which was able to overcome 14 first-half turnovers to defeat No. 9 Brighton, 78-70, on Friday night at Madison Park High School.

The key was a second-half surge led by senior Alexander Delarosa, who scored 12 of his 17 points in the final two quarters, as New Mission committed no more than five second-half turnovers.

“It is pathetic when you are a team of all guards and you are turning the ball over 14 times,’’ New Mission coach Cory McCarthy said. “Although we won the game I am absolutely furious with my team right now.’’

New Mission (5-2) seemed a bit uneasy against the Brighton pressure in the first half. The Titans were able to keep the game close and only trailed by 1 at the half.

“All we had to do in the first half was to maintain them. Stay with them, stay within 2 or 3 points and that’s what we did,’’ New Mission senior point guard Charlie Mitchell said.

The Titans came out in the third quarter leaning on the 6-foot-2-inch Delarosa. A jumper by New Mission senior Charles Mitchell halfway through the third quarter gave them the lead and they never looked back.

Brighton (3-2) trimmed the lead to 2 early in the fourth quarter on a transition 3-pointer by junior Mykel Derring (18 points). But Charles Mitchell answered with a transition three of his own on the ensuing possession for New Mission.

The Bengals were within a point with just under four minutes to play, but fast-break layups by senior Daeshawn McLaughlin and Charlie Mitchell kept Brighton at bay.
