Minnesota hired P.J. Fleck on Friday to take over a football program reeling from a threatened player boycott of the Holiday Bowl and the handling of a sexual assault investigation. The hiring comes three days after Tracy Claeys was fired following a standoff between players and the administration over the suspension of 10 players in connection with the assault allegations that date to September. Fleck, 36, was 30-22 in four years at Western Michigan, guiding the Broncos to a 13-1 record this season and a spot in the Cotton Bowl . . . Florida promoted linebackers coach Randy Shannon to defensive coordinator . . . Iowa offensive coordinator Greg Davis retired, ending a career spanning over four decades . . . Former Florida quarterback Treon Harris plans to resume his career at Tennessee State. Harris played 20 games at Florida and started the final eight games of the 2015 season.

Mariners acquire righty Gallardo

The Mariners got righthander Yovani Gallardo from the Orioles for outfielder Seth Smith. Seattle also sent righty Nathan Karns to Kansas City for outfielder Jarrod Dyson. Another potential starter was high on Seattle’s list after trading Taijuan Walker to Arizona in November.

Free agent outfielder Travis Snider agreed to a minor league contract with the Rangers and will attend spring training as he tries to return to the major for the first time since 2015 . . . The White Sox designated outfielder Jason Coats for assignment. Coats spent most of last season at Triple A Charlotte.

Cavaliers looking to land Korver

The Cavaliers hope to acquire Hawks sharpshooter Kyle Korver by Saturday at the latest, according to league sources. ESPN reported Cleveland will send Mo Williams, Mike Dunleavy, and a protected 2019 first-round pick to Atlanta. On Friday, the Cavs sent their first-round pick this June to the Blazers for a 2018 first-rounder Cleveland sent to Portland last year. Cleveland could not trade its 2019 first-rounder if they had not reacquired their 2018 first-rounder, as league rules say teams can’t trade first-round picks in consecutive seasons.

The primary factor delaying completion of the Korver trade, sources said, is Atlanta’s ongoing effort to find a third team willing to take on Dunleavy. But the Hawks, sources said, waived Ryan Kelly to open up an extra roster spot in the event they need to make room for both Williams and Dunleavy . . . The Suns waived guard John Jenkins, who averaged 1.8 points and 3.3 minutes in four games.

Djokovic to face Murray in Qatar

Novak Djokovic survived to beat Fernando Verdasco, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, and set up a Qatar Open final in Doha against No. 1 Andy Murray, who beat Tomas Berdych, 6-3, 6-4, to stretch his win streak to 28 . . . Rafael Nadal was up a set and had a break point when he sent a forehand just wide and Milos Raonic took advantage for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 quarterfinal win at the Brisbane International in Australia . . . France will play Americans Coco Vandeweghe and Jack Sock in the Hopman Cup final in Perth, Australia, after Richard Gasquet and Kristina Mladenovic beat the Swiss team of Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic, 4-2, 4-2, in the deciding doubles match. Habs’ Gallagher has broken hand

Montreal Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher will be out at least eight weeks after having surgery Thursday on his fractured left hand, according to NHL.com. Gallagher, 24, was hit by a shot by teammate Shea Weber Wednesday at Dallas . . . The Predators signed defenseman Matt Irwin, a UMass product who played two games for the Bruins last season, to a one-year extension worth $650,000 for 2017-18 . . . Mia Manganello matched the US record in the women's 3,000 meters, finishing in 4:01.98, at the US Speedskating Championships in Kearns, Utah. An issue with the lap board caused Manganello to think she had another lap to go or else she likely would have broken the record.

Texas Motor Speedway will repave its 1½-mile track and reduce the high banking in the first and second turns. The work is scheduled to begin next week and finish in mid-March.
