When the Braintree girls’ basketball team needed to answer an Archbishop Williams bucket Saturday afternoon, the Wamps turned to Keelah Dixon. And any time Braintree needed a defensive stop, Dixon was in the right place at the right time to force a turnover.
The junior guard finished with a game-high 28 points to lead the top-ranked Wamps past No. 4 Archbishop Williams, 57-42, on the Bishops’ home court.
“We love big games, we don’t get to play them often, so when it’s competitive we’re really excited and we just bring our game,’’ Dixon said. “I knew it was going to be a scrappy game. They’re a really good team and we knew it was going to be kind of an aggression thing — like who’s more aggressive, who wants it more — and I think we proved ourselves.’’
Archbishop Williams senior captain Victoria Dean scored the first basket of the day after driving hard into the lane and making a layup, but Dixon countered with 5 straight points and the Wamps (12-0) never looked back.
“When things weren’t going our way or they were just messy and we were all over the place, [Dixon] hit some of the big shots that kind of got us settled and allowed us to take a deep breath a little bit,’’ Braintree coach Kristen McDonnell said. “She hit threes, she went to the basket, she forced most of their foul trouble, which was good in the first half, so we got a lot out of that, too.’’
Braintree led, 15-6, after the first quarter. Archbishop Williams (9-2) picked up the offense in the second, but the Wamps held a 26-18 lead at halftime and opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Senior captain Brianna Herlihy finished with 14 points for Braintree. Sophomore guard Asiah Dingle led Archbishop Williams with 17.
“Whenever Braintree plays Archies it’s always a battle,’’ McDonnell said. “There’s a lot of pride on the line in terms of representing the town and they play really well against us. I think they get very excited for the game and they made us work for everything we got tonight.’’
