Kyle Smith scored twice and Danny Tirone made 31 saves as New Hampshire snapped a six-game losing streak by stunning fourth-ranked Providence, 3-1, on Saturday night at Schneider Arena.
Erik Foley struck first for the Friars (17-5-4, 8-3-3 Hockey East), scoring just 3:20 into the game. But Smith answered at 8:33 for UNH (9-13-4, 3-7-4), which gained a split of the weekend series.
Dan Correale scored his 15th of the season just 38 seconds into the second period and Tirone made it stand up for the Wildcats. Smith padded the lead at 4:32 of the final period.
Maine 5, UMass 4 — Will Merchant scored twice and the visiting Black Bears (7-15-6, 4-8-2 Hockey East) built a 3-0 lead and held on to hand the Minutemen (7-16-4, 2-11-4) their eighth straight defeat and 14th in the last 15 games.
UMass-Lowell 8, Arizona St. 1 — C.J. Smith had a hat trick and Jake Kamrass had two goals and two assists as the eighth-ranked River Hawks (17-5-4) poured 57 shots on net en route to a rout of the visiting Sun Devils (5-21-0).
Men’s basketball
Oklahoma 77, LSU 75 — Buddy Hield made seven of his eight 3-pointers in the second half on his way to a 32-point performance, Isaiah Cousins hit a go-ahead jumper with four seconds left, and the No. 1 Sooners (18-2) overcame a 14-point deficit to edge the host Tigers.
LSU (13-8) didn’t go quietly. Antonio Blakeney hit a pair of late threes and the second tied it at 75 with 24 seconds left. Ben Simmons had 14 points for LSU, highlighted by a crowd-pleasing reverse dunk.
Providence 73, Georgetown 69 — Ben Bentil and Kris Dunn provided a frontcourt-backcourt 1-2 punch and the No. 10 Friars held off several second-half charges to turn back the Hoyas.
Bentil and Dunn each scored 26 points for Providence (18-4, 6-3 Big East). Georgetown (13-9, 6-3), which defeated No. 5 Xavier on Jan. 19, couldn’t pull off the same magic against Providence. L.J. Peak led Georgetown with 19 points.
Elon 71, Northeastern 67 — Tyler Seibring scored 11 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and made the go-ahead jumper with 1:14 left as the Phoenix (13-10, 4-6 Colonial Athletic) erased a 14-point second-half deficit to beat the Huskies at Matthews Arena.
David Walker made six 3-pointers and finished with 25 points for NU (12-11, 4-6).
Fordham 78, UMass 72 — Joseph Chartouny had 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists to help the Rams (12-8, 3-6 Atlantic 10) beat the Minutemen (8-12, 1-7) in overtime at the Mullins Center.
Trey Davis led UMass with 21 points on 12-of-14 shooting at the stripe. Donte Clark added 19 points.
Holy Cross 87, Navy 80 — Malachi Alexander and Cullen Hamilton combined for 50 points and keyed a late comeback as the host Crusaders knocked off the Midshipmen in overtime.
Alexander scored a career-high 26 points, including a go-ahead basket in OT, and sank 7 of 8 foul shots in the extra period, and Hamilton poured in a season-high 24 points for Holy Cross (9-12, 4-6 Patriot). Shawn Anderson had a career-high 25 points for Navy (15-7, 6-3), which lost for the 17th time in 18 games at the Hart Center.
Stony Brook 72, Vermont 61 — Trae Bell-Haynes led the host Catamounts (13-10, 5-3) with 13 points but it wasn’t enough to slow the Seawolves (17-4, 8-0), who remained unbeaten in America East play.
Maine 74, Binghamton 63 — Kevin Little scored 22 points, Issac Vann added 19, and the host Black Bears (8-13, 4-4 America East) pulled away midway through the second half to beat the Bearcats (5-16, 2-6).
UNH 84, UMBC 81 — Jaleen Smith had 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, and the visiting Wildcats (12-9, 5-3 America East) edged the Retrievers (5-18, 1-7).
Sacred Heart 72, Bryant 71 — Cane Broome hit a step-back 3-pointer with 10 seconds left, and the host Pioneers (6-15, 5-5 Northeast) survived a shot at the buzzer to escape with a win over the Bulldogs (7-16, 4-6).
Women’s basketball
UConn 83, Memphis 40 — Breanna Stewart scored 19 points to lead the top-ranked Huskies past the visiting Tigers, extending the team’s winning streak to 57 games and securing their 23d straight 20-win season. The Huskies (10-0 American Athletic) are 20-0 for the ninth time in program history.
Harvard 69, Columbia 66 — AnnMarie Healy scored a career-high 27 points and the visiting Crimson (8-9, 3-1 Ivy) held off the Lions (11-8, 0-4).
Women’s hockey
BU 6, Merrimack 2 — Alexis Crossley scored twice and Sarah Lefort, Victoria Bach, and Kayla Tutino each had a goal and two assists to get the host Terriers (17-9-2, 14-4-2 Hockey East) over the Warriors (4-23-1, 2-15-1).
Harvard 4, Princeton 1 — Sydney Daniels scored twice and Emerance Maschmeyer stopped 34 of 35 shots, lifting the host Crimson (12-8-1, 9-6-1 ECAC) over the ninth-ranked Tigers (17-5-1, 10-5-1).
Football
Senior Bowl — SEC quarterbacks Dak Prescott, Jake Coker, and Brandon Allen all led scoring drives to help lead the South to a 27-16 win over the North in Mobile, Ala.
Arkansas’s Allen passed for a game-high 106 yards, including a couple of on-target deep balls. Mississippi State’s Prescott threw for 61 yards and a touchdown with both teams rotating their four quarterbacks after each quarter.
Baylor’s 6-foot-7-inch defensive end Shawn Oakman loomed large on the North defense. He racked up two first-half sacks and a forced fumble.
The game’s top quarterback prospect, North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz, had a mostly quiet first quarter. He completed 6 of 10 passes for 50 yards and the North didn’t score.
