A Dorchester Municipal Court probation officer is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday on charges that he raped a woman, who was on probation, in his courthouse office, Suffolk County prosecutors and Boston police said Tuesday.
William Averill, 50, of West Roxbury, was indicted June 1 by a grand jury on three counts of rape, three counts of indecent assault and battery, and one count of assault with intent to rape, officials said in a news release.
Prosecutors allege Averill assaulted a woman in her 20s who had been sentenced to complete one year of probation after she was convicted of larceny and receiving stolen property.
The woman reported Jan. 5 to the courthouse, where prosecutors said Averill led her to his office and began to touch and kiss her.
The woman told him to stop and Averill did, the statement said. Later, however, prosecutors say Averill closed the blinds in his office and sexually assaulted the woman.
After leaving the courthouse, the woman called a relative and disclosed the assault, leading to an investigation by Boston police and the Suffolk district attorney’s office, the statement said.
Investigators developed a DNA profile from evidence collected during the investigation and compared it to a DNA sample provided by Averill, the statement said.
The profile matched the sample provided by Averill and excluded more than 99 percent of the male population as possible contributors, officials said.
Averill has been on administrative leave without pay since authorities began investigating the woman’s accusations earlier this year, said Coria Holland, a spokeswoman for the Office of the Commissioner of Probation. He earned $84,303 in 2015, state payroll records show.
Holland said Averill has been a probation officer since 1998. She declined to comment further.
Averill’s defense attorney did not immediately return a message Tuesday seeking comment.
Averill is expected to report to Suffolk Superior Court Wednesday for his arraignment, according to a spokesman for the DA’s office.
