Authorities said the “unusual item’’ found inside a Bertucci’s restaurant in Beverly that led to an evacuation Monday amid fears it was a bomb was not a hoax — it was a makeshift medical device.
The object was “a homemade medical device used for electrical stimulation by a Parkinson’s patient to help with joint pain,’’ State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey’s office said in a statement Tuesday. “It was not a hoax device.’’
The device was found at the restaurant on Enon Street at about 4:45 p.m., Beverly police said Monday.
Bertucci’s was evacuated, in addition to many other businesses at the shopping plaza, including Starbucks, Eastern Bank, and Garden City Pub.
The scene was cleared at about 7 p.m. Monday.
Ostroskey’s office said in the statement that investigators have spoken to the patient and their doctor about the device.
“The patient called the restaurant last night looking to retrieve the device accidentally left behind,’’ the statement said. “Investigators have been able to corroborate his explanation with his physician.’’
