UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma was hospitalized with an undisclosed illness. The school released a statement saying Auriemma, 62, had boarded a plane Saturday morning at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Conn., but decided to deplane because he was not feeling well. The school says he was taken to a hospital for observation and was resting comfortably . . . The University of Nevada at Las Vegas moved swiftly to hire a men’s basketball coach after Chris Beard’s sudden exit, agreeing with New Mexico State’s Marvin Menzies on a five-year contract. Menzies’s contract must still be approved by UNLV’s board of regents . . . The University of Oklahoma men and women won NCAA team gymnastics titles. The Sooners handily defended their men’s championship, beating runner-up Stanford by nearly 10 points in Columbus, Ohio. The women ended Florida’s three-year run of team titles by holding off Louisiana State University on the final event in Fort Worth, Texas . . . Southern California’s blind long-snapper, Jake Olson, completed two field goal snaps in the Trojans’ spring football game in Los Angeles.

Fan stable after hit by foul
A fan hit by a foul ball at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., was in stable condition at a hospital, one day after she was injured during a game between the White Sox and the Rays. The ball went through a small gap in the protective netting behind an area for photographers in the seventh inning Friday. The woman was sitting in the lower box seats next to Tampa Bay’s dugout on the first base side. Stadium workers were on the field Saturday adjusting the netting on both the first and third base sides . . . The Mets placed pitcher Jacob deGrom on the family medical emergency list because of health complications involving his newborn child. The All-Star righthander will be on the list from three to seven days . . . The Angels placed outfielder Daniel Nava on the disabled list with tendinitis in his left knee.
. . . The Rockies placed catcher Nick Hundley on the seven-day concussion disabled list after he took a foul tip off his mask Wednesday. The team made the move retroactive to Thursday. . . . The Boston Breakers lost their National Women’s Soccer League season opener, 1-0, to the Washington Spirit in Boyds, Md. Libby Stout made six saves for the Breakers . . . Sebastian Giovinco’s goal in the first minute stood up in Toronto FC’s 1-0 victory over DC United in Washington. Ignacio Piatti scored from just outside the box in the first minute of stoppage time to give the Montreal Impact a 2-1 victory over the host Chicago Fire. Justin Meram had a goal and two assists and the host Columbus Crew beat New York City FC, 3-2, for their first victory of the season. Dominique Badji scored his first goal of the season in the 82d minute to help the host Colorado Rapids beat the New York Red Bulls, 2-1, on a snow-covered field. Chad Marshall headed in a corner kick late in the first half and hometown rookie Jordan Morris scored his first career goal to help the Seattle Sounders beat the Philadelphia Union, 2-1. The Harvard men’s heavyweight varsity eight, ranked fifth, could not overcome a big start by third-ranked Princeton as the Tigers won the Compton Cup rowing competition on the Charles River. The Crimson tried to rally but ran out of course as the Tigers posted a 1.7-second victory. Harvard’s lone win of the day came when the second varsity beat Princeton by 3.2 seconds . . . Katie Ledecky won the 800-meter freestyle by nearly 15 seconds at the Arena Pro Swim meet in Mesa, Ariz., finishing in 8 minutes, 13.20 seconds.
