The Revolution left the field last Saturday following their 1-1 draw with Toronto FC at Gillette Stadium feeling disappointed with the outcome and the officiating after a goal was disallowed right before the final whistle.
However, the Revolution have managed to grab at least one point from all but one of their six matches this season, with three more available Sunday when New England visits Orlando City SC for a matinee.
Orlando lost for the first time in five matches this season on April 8, 2-1, when the Philadelphia Union scored a late goal. Replays showed Philadelphia should have been flagged for an offside violation on the winner.
Orlando was without the services of top scorer and Canadian international Cyle Larin last week after the forward suffered a hamstring injury against Portland two weeks ago. Coach Adrian Heath was hopeful Larin will play Sunday.
The key player for the Lions over the last two weeks has been former FIFA Player of the Year Kaka. The Brazilian midfielder returned from injury two games ago and has recorded a goal and two assists.
After facing reigning MLS MVP Sebastian Giovinco last weekend, Revolution midfielder Scott Caldwell knows his team’s game plan for Kaka will be very similar.
“You just want to limit his ability to change the game,’’ said Caldwell. “Whether it’s his touches or where he gets the ball on the field. It just means, as a team, we have to collectively put together a full 90 minutes and not let [Orlando] get into the attack.’’
The teams’ last meeting came on Sept. 5, when the Revolution defeated a battered Orlando squad, 3-0, at Gillette. In the only other match between the teams, last May 8 in Orlando, the Revolution blew a late 2-0 lead and settled for a 2-2 draw, the start of a stretch in which New England won one of 12 matches.
As for Sunday, Revolution coach Jay Heaps feels confident in the way his team is playing, despite winning just once this season.
“We were really happy with a lot of what we did [the last two weeks],’’ said Heaps. “We played well and created enough [chances]. Obviously, the final pieces are inches away. I feel like we’re creating chances and getting guys in position, and now we’ve got to finish them.’’
