Community leaders and volunteers met at the Medina County SPCA Feb. 1 to launch Abuse Awareness Month. This is the third year the SPCA, the Children’s Center of Medina County and the Battered Women’s Shelter have joined forces to make a greater impact on abuse in our county.

This year’s theme is “Any Abuse Affects All.”

Between the three organizations, about 4,000 calls per year are received. From those, about 500 child abuse cases are opened, 80 people seek nearly 4,000 nights of shelter and 100 animal cruelty or neglect cases are opened.

Medina Police Chief Edward Kinney was one of the supporters in attendance.

“Your collaborative effort is commendable and should be a model throughout the state. Our department looks forward to future cooperation in this effort,” Kinney said.
