SCORE: Yankees 5, Red Sox 3
RECORD: 7-3
BREAKDOWN: The Sox led, 3-2, after seven innings before the Yankees scored three times in the eighth against Robby Scott. Jeff Hendrix, a minor leaguer added to the roster for the game, had a two-run double to give the Yankees the lead.
THUMBS UP: Brian Johnson threw two scoreless innings, giving him four on the spring . . . Xander Bogaerts was 2 for 2 with a double . . . Brandon Workman, Matt Barnes, and Carson Smith had shutout innings of relief.
THUMBS DOWN: Joe Kelly gave up a long home run to Aaron Hicks in the third inning . . . Scott put four men on base in the eighth inning and got only one out . . . The game took three hours and 46 minutes. Even in spring training these teams can’t play at a decent pace.
MEDICAL REPORT: Three pitchers coming off surgery — Eduardo Rodriguez, Tyler Thornburg, and Steven Wright — had bullpen sessions before the game and came through fine. Rodriguez threw 45 pitches and may be close to live batting practice.
AROUND THE BASES: Bogaerts spent two days with coach Ramon Vazquez working on his throwing. Cora said the shortstop made throwing errors on some routine plays last season because of poor throwing mechanics, specifically being “lazy’’ with his front side. Cora thought Bogaerts was making progress but he made a poor throw in the third inning that Mitch Moreland had to dig out . . . Reserve outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury was not with the Yankees. He has an oblique strain and is out indefinitely. He has three years and $68.3 million left on his contract
NEXT GAME: The Sox travel to Sarasota on Sunday to play the Baltimore Orioles at 1:05 p.m. Lefthander Jalen Beeks gets the start against righthander Gabriel Ynoa. The game is on NESN and WEEI-AM.
