FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox sent lefthander Drew Pomeranz for an MRI on Saturday, a standard move after he left Friday’s game against the Cardinals in the second inning with a sore forearm.
The result was what Pomeranz expected: nothing too serious.
“Small, mild flexor [tendon] strain . . . Just a little soreness,’’ he said.
Manager Alex Cora said Pomeranz would rest for two more days and be evaluated again on Tuesday.
“At this time, we feel pretty confident he’s going to be fine,’’ Cora said.
Pomeranz has experienced similar injuries in spring training in years past, come out of games, and then bounced back quickly. It happened last season.
“I feel fine,’’ Pomeranz said. “I feel way better than yesterday, which is good. If something was really wrong I’d feel a lot worse today.’’
Getting ready
J.D. Martinez and Eduardo Nunez should be playing their first Grapefruit League games soon.
Nunez is set to be the designated hitter on Tuesday against Tampa Bay. Martinez is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday against the Twins. Both players were signed after camp started.
The Sox have Chris Sale throwing in a minor league intrasquad game on Sunday and David Price on Monday. Martinez and Nunez will get at-bats in one of both of those games.
Martinez will work in left field and right field during spring training. Once the season starts, Cora sees Martinez being able to play left field at Fenway Park when needed, and right field in some road parks.
Martinez would be the right fielder when Mookie Betts gets a day off. The goal, Cora said, would be to avoid moving Betts around. He has not played another position since 2015, when he was the primary center fielder.
“Ballpark configuration plays a huge part of the decision making,’’ Cora said.
Martinez very much considers himself an outfielder even though he fits the Red Sox best as a DH. How Cora makes that work could be a season-long issue.
Slow start
Betts was 0 for 2 with a walk in a 5-3 loss against the Yankees. He is 0 for 12 with four strikeouts in five games. Betts hit .364 in his three previous spring trainings . . . Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, 78, arrived in camp on Friday and will work with the minor league hitters . . . The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s basketball team plays for its conference championship at home on Sunday afternoon. Sale, an alumnus, has a suite for the game and invited his teammates to come if they are available.
