If a sheriff can’t reliably keep a gun in a school, what then?

Kudos to the Michigan county sheriff who, upon leaving his weapon in a school gym locker room, said, “I’’m devastated with my lack of accountability in this matter’’ (“Sheriff apologizes for gun in school,’’ Daily Briefing, March 14). Praise as well to the student who alerted an adult, and to the adult who returned the gun to the sheriff.

Our jobs as educators occupy our complete focus while in school. To those who ask, “What if a stranger brings a weapon to school?’’ we respond, “What if the weapons are already in school, in the hands of people whose attention is already fully absorbed by the jobs they are hired to do?’’
